The blog for small town but not small time photojournalism

My name is Gary Cosby Jr. I work in Decatur, Alabama for The Decatur Daily newspaper which is owned by the Shelton family. We have not gone the way of most papers and become part of a giant media conglomerate and I owe my ability to write this blog to the courtesy of my employer.

I have been a photojournalist for 19 years. I began my photo j career in Elizabeth City, NC working for The Daily Advance. I worked there for four years before moving to Alabama which also happens to be my home state. In fact, Decatur is not more than an hour and a half from where I grew up and my parents and brother and his family live about an hour away. I have been here for fifteen years which is a whole lot longer than I ever planned on but life has a way of happening. This area just happens to be an excellent place to raise a family among its other virtues.

I am married and have a wonderful family that includes eight children, four boys, four girls. This, by the way, is where I draw my original screen name from, Sixteenfeet. Eight kids times two feet per child equals sixteen feet, ergo, the name Sixteenfeet. Fortunately, not all of them live at home. Two of the oldest now are out of the nest. Just in case you feel compelled to ask, yes, we do know how that happens which partially explains why we have eight. It is kind of fun, at least until the teenage years!

If you have read very many posts you will have deduced that I am a Christian. I have been involved in the church all my life and truly love the Lord Jesus. I am currently an elder in my church and even preach from time to time. If you have the inclination to find out more or should you need some prayer for some reason or another, please feel free to contact me and I will pray for/with you or help you however I can.

My work history includes a stint as a photo assistant for a wedding/studio photographer while I was in college at the University of North Alabama. I worked as a corporate/portrait photographer for the C. Lloyd Johnson Company in Norfolk, VA while in grad school in Virginia Beach at CBN University. I later worked full time for CLJ as their Canon Photo/Video specialist training sales people and helping sell the product, conduct seminars for consumers and also handle the in-house photo needs for the company. Now I am fully a photojournalist but I am beginning to branch out a bit and do some freelance work like weddings and portraits and a little commercial work to help keep the family fed.

I really hope you are enjoying this blog. It has been a blast to write and I hope it is something I can do for a long time. If you have any feedback you would like to give me or would just like to drop a line and chat a bit or if you would like to send a large cash contribution, please drop me a line at garycos8@gmail.com

Thanks for taking the time to get to know me and I hope you continue to enjoy the blog.

About the photos:  The top photo is by my former coworker and a guy who is still my friend, Jonathan Palmer and I call this my Napolean pose.  The next photo is a self portrait of me with Peter and David at the beach last year.  Good times.

  1. Hey Gary,

Thanks for laying it out. I’ve been reading since August last year… someone must have given you a shout out for me to have picked up on you, and I’ve been reading ever since. I came initially for your sports photos but stayed for everything else. Yours is what I would call a comfortable blog. It’s simply a really good, relaxing but informative read. I like your writing style and love the photos. It’s nice to know a little more about the man behind the words. Keep ‘em coming.

    Regards,

    Bruce

  2. Hey Gary,

Picked up from the blogroll of Strobist some half year ago, ALittleNews has been informative and comfortable reading, espescially with a mug of hot chocolate on a stormy night. Its heartening to read about ethics of photojournalsim being upheld, irregardless of paper we’re shooting for.

    Keep em’ coming!

  3. I appreciate the information you share in the blog! Thanks for taking the time to give us this information.

  4. You take such great shots.

I’m an Alabama fan and saw some of the pictures you made during Saturdays football game. The one you captured of Julio Jones one-handed catch was just perfect.

I hope you give classes one day to teach others your talents.

    Thanks.

    Kosta
