The Photographer’s Wife

with 2 comments

Okay boys and girls, this one needs an extra explanation.  Anna Higginbotham is my buddy David’s wife.  She is kind of a special lady but don’t believe a word she says, especially about the tutus.  That is completely made up.  I promise!  I was part of David and Anna’s engagement which took place in a warehouse.  No joke.  That Dave has a creative mind to be sure.  Then I photographed their wedding along with Emily Saunders who worked with me at The Daily at that time.  As David moved from The Daily to his new career and began freelancing he invited me along to be his second shooter and photo assistant.  We have worked together doing that for two years now.

What can I say about being married to a photographer…well, plenty, but that would make this post R rated. I’m just kidding!!! After all, David being a photographer is the reason we met in the first place. I won’t bore you with the details, but when David was a newspaper photographer, he came out to take my picture as I had just been named Morgan County Junior Miss…the rest is history. I digress…so what does it mean to be a photographers wife. Well, it’s the most glorious job a lady could ask for…carry this bag, hold that light stand in 40 mph wind gusts, and calm the bride.

Yes friends, this is Anna and David married over his head!

Actually the hardest thing about being a photographer’s wife is helping David realize how truly talented he is. He is definitely his worst critic, while I sing his praises…along with his many other fans. Often times, he may come home from a shoot and not be as pleased with the photo’s as he thinks he should be, while the subjects in these photos absolutely love them and send e-mails with nothing but praise. In my career in the marketing world, if my customer is happy, then I am happy. However, I have learned that is not necessarily the case with photographers.  The customer can be as happy as can be, but if the photographer doesn’t think the images are his best, that shoot will haunt him. I guess its just part of the business.

The other thing I have learned is that for two people to shoot together, there has to be some type of chemistry. (Yes I think Cosby has a man-crush on David) Take Cosby and David for instance. They both worked at the same newspaper for years, but so did plenty of other photographers. The difference is, they have some sort of weird, know what the other needs before they ask kind of thing going on. I guess its kind of like a good marriage…the way they work together is amazing and like a well choreographed ballet routine. (Okay, now I am picturing them both in tutu’s) The last thing I have learned about being married to a photographer is that I truly do not know what I look like. I mean, we all love our little touch ups now and then…a wrinkle here, a zit there…why is it that the mirror doesn’t display the same image of me that David’s camera does? Very odd I know….I think we need new mirrors.
