Reece’s Journey – A Quick Update
For those of you following the series on my son Reece, we had an unexpected development with his ears and Reece is going to have tubes put in his ears. This is a minor surgical procedure but, you know what they say, a minor surgical procedure is something done to someone else. It is major surgery if it is done on you, or on your children! Anyway, I had surgery to remove my tonsils when I was a child and I still remember it being the most terrifying single event of my life. The point of this is just to ask that those of you who pray to please offer up a prayer for my little man Friday morning. The procedure is minor, really, and should be over quickly but they do have to put him under anesthesia and that makes me a little nervous.
Otherwise, Reece is doing great and his speech and motor skills are improving all the time. Having the tubes put in should help him distinguish sounds more clearly and that in turn will help him speak. He now has a vocabulary of about four or five words, depends on the day, and three or four signs, again, depends on the day. Reece can do a good deal when he wants to but it really does have to be his idea. Seeing him sign “bubbles” is absolutely fascinating. We see him signing “enough” all the time. The child has a real personality.
I don’t think he will ever crawl but he scoots on his little rear end all over the house with a particular fondness for going into the bathroom when no one is looking. He really likes his bath so I guess that is why he scoots there whenever he can. I will give you guys a more formal post about Reece pretty soon but for now just remember him Friday. Thanks and blessings to you all.

Good luck little man.

I’m going to go ahead and say a quick prayer right now GC. I sometimes get absent-minded and I don’t want to forget. Comfort him to the best of your ability and the big guy upstairs will carry him the rest of the way. Hopefully the tubes will be a blessing. Love you guys. Corey and Sara.

My son (who is now 30) had this done when he was small also. We were so used to him that we didn’t realize until he went to preschool how poor his speech and hearing were. I know what you mean about the major surgery thing. Nevertheless, if it is any encouragement, it was great for him, no bad after effects (I believe we had to have the tubes replaced at one time; they often fall out on their own) and his speech and hearing rapidly became normal. I’ve known lots of kids who had the procedure since and never knew anyone to have a problem. Good luck!
